An Analysis of Organizational Approaches for Advancing American University AI Education

With Burton Clark's conceptual framework of the “triangle of coordination,” a lens through which the strategic interaction between governmental, industry, and academic forces is explored, this study scrutinizes 26 new AI institutions, expected to be instituted across 21 universities and supported by NSF funding since 2020. The institutions contribute to university AI education with advancement of AI techniques and applications. But several key areas for the progression of AI education should receive greater academic concern, which encompass: the enhancement of regulatory oversight to maintain standards and ethical adherence; the redefinition of educational frameworks to accommodate the interdisciplinary nature of AI; the cultivation of organizational innovation to transcend traditional departmental boundaries; the promotion of international collaboration to capitalize on the global relevance of AI; and the judicious management of market forces to align academic exploration with real-world industry challenges.
