Photonic crystal waveguiding: mode solution and analysis in an envelope picture

The envelope approximation formalism yields a direct picture of the waveguiding mechanism, allowing us to predict the frequency of the guided modes, the dispersion relations of waveguides and the shapes of the modes. It yields results that are in excellent agreement with a fully-vectorial computation of the field.
