Relay Selection and Power Control in D2D-enabled Vehicular Communication

This paper presents a novel approach for selecting an idle cellular user (CUE) as a relay in device-to-device (D2D)-enabled vehicular communications to serve vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) pairs. By leveraging D2D communications, direct communication between nearby devices, i.e., vehicles (VUE), can be established without connecting to a 5G base station (gNB). The proposed solution not only focuses on assigning a relay UE to a V2V pair but also addresses resource allocation, i.e., transmission power, to minimize interference with active CUE. The main objective of the paper is to optimize the transmission power between the V2V pairs and the selected CUE, aiming to maximize network capacity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing approaches (i.e., conventional and without power control), leading to a significant improvement in average capacity of V2V pair.
