A Model-Based Control Scheme for a Battery Charging System Using a High Gain Step-Up DC-DC Converter

The modeling and control law dedicated to a DC-DC energy storage system using a battery network is discussed in this research. The selected converter is based on a network of inductors switched by active semiconductors. Thus, the DC-DC topology improves the output voltage conversion ratio with respect to the conventional step-up converter commonly used in energy storage system applications. The dedicated control law is based on the well-known algorithm used in energy storage systems called constant-current and constant-voltage. Hence, it is proposed a control law composed of a dedicated multiple-loop controller for each stage within the charging process. In addition, an uncertainty estimator based on the immersion and invariance technique is proposed to mitigate the effect of the parametric uncertainty and parasitic resistances considered in the battery charging system. Injecting a constant current value and maintaining the voltage at a desired reference value are the main goals of the proposed battery control law. Finally, numerical results evaluate the proposed control scheme is performance.
