MediSync: An IoT and ML-Powered Medication Adherence Solution

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an innovative technology poised to reshape the landscape of computing and communications. In recent years, IoT has garnered significant attention for its potential to address critical challenges within the healthcare domain. Healthcare is a vital component of sustainable development across nations, and IoT offers a diverse array of applications to enhance healthcare services. Of particular relevance is the management of medication adherence, a crucial aspect of healthcare, given that a substantial portion of the global population relies on medication regimens, with millions of prescriptions being issued annually. This research endeavors to contribute to the field of healthcare by developing a sophisticated IoT-enabled component with the primary aim of ensuring that patients adhere to their prescribed medication schedules. Non-adherence to medication regimens can have serious consequences for patients' health and can strain healthcare systems. Our IoT component addresses this issue by monitoring medication adherence and providing timely interventions when necessary. The IoT system continuously monitors patients' medication consumption schedules. If a dosage window is missed, the system initiates a reminder mechanism. These reminders are dispatched to designated primary contacts of the patient through text messages or email, ensuring timely intervention and support. In addition, the IoT system employs advanced sensors and machine learning techniques to identify individual pills placed within the pillbox. This capability not only ensures that the correct medication is taken but also allows for precise inventory management. Users are alerted to refill the pillbox when the medication level falls below a predefined threshold. The implementation of this IoT-based system leverages wireless networks, cloud computing, and machine learning. Data from IoT sensors are transmitted via Wi-Fi to a cloud-based platform, where machine learning algorithms perform medication identification and trigger notifications. This technology stack ensures scalability, flexibility, and reliability in healthcare environments. This research embodies a multi-disciplinary approach, where IoT technology converges with healthcare, cloud computing, and machine learning. The system offers a robust and scalable solution to enhance medication adherence, reduce healthcare system burdens, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
