Industrial Application of the Serial Peripheral Interface Protocol on Field Programmable Gate Arrays

The Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter UART, Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), and Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) are widely utilized hardware communication protocols. The process of selecting one option from a set of alternatives may provide difficulties owing to the unique benefits and drawbacks connected with each choice. This article is a thorough examination of the three protocols, with a detailed explanation of their elements, functions, and potential advantages and disadvantages. After doing a comparison investigation of the transmission ranges, it becomes apparent that the modern SPI protocol demonstrates a greater degree of superiority. The UART protocol demonstrates enhanced reliability in performance, however, the SPI protocol provides greater diversity in terms of communication options with fewer resources. In the context of power consumption, it can be observed that UART has superior performance compared to the other two protocols.
