Research on Link Delay Optimization Method and Engineered Application of Valve Base Controller for VSC-HVDC

With the project operation of voltage source converter-high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC), the stability issues associated with VSC-HVDC are coming to be exposed. The control and protection link delay of VSC-HVDC has a great influence on the system steady state control, dynamic response, fault ride-through and solving system oscillation. Valve base control system (VBC) is an important component of the control and protection system for VSC-HVDC. In order to achieve the high precision and stability operation of the VSC-HVDC system, it is important to research on link delay optimization method of VBC. In this paper, by analyzing the control and protection link delay composition of the VBC, the optimization method is proposed in terms of execution delay and communication delay respectively, and the optimization methods has been applied to the design of VBC system of an VSC-HVDC project. The in-plant test and actual operation of the engineering VBC system have fully verified the effectiveness of the proposed optimization method.
