A Miniaturized Slotted Patch Antenna for 5G Millimeter Wave Applications

Designing an antenna for fifth generation millimeter wave applications is one of the most challenging yet high in-demand area of study for research of wireless communication. In this work, we proposed a miniaturized slotted rectangular patch antenna configuration for fifth generation millimeter wave communication. The radiating patch of proposed antenna has a footprint of 3.159 mm $\times$ 4.232 mm. Two vertical rectangular slots on opposite sides near to edges and four triangles with same geometric size, forming a flower shaped double bow-tie pattern, are etched out at the center of radiator. Due to the addition of these slots and truncated patch corners, the proposed antenna performs more effectively in terms of impedance matching, and radiation characteristics. For the excitation of the presented antenna, coaxial feeding technique is used. This model is printed on 0.508 mm thick substrate of Rogers 5880 material with a compact and lightweight size of 5.279 mm$\times$ 6.232 mm. According to the simulation findings, the impedance bandwidth below -10 dB is matched in the band from 27.09 GHz to 28.89 GHz which corresponds to the millimeter wave bands of 28 GHz, globally authorized by 3G partnership project. Moreover, in the operational bandwidth, an approximate gain of 7.5 dBi is attained of the center frequency of 28 GHz. Based on its small size and robust performance, the suggested antenna is a viable option for millimeter wave applications.
