Current and Evolving Applications to IoT and Applications to Smart Buildings and Energy Management

Artificial intelligence, machine learning (ML), and deep learning techniques enable one to address the very large amounts of data collected by the multitude of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors deployed in the environment and to reach meaningful conclusions and suggest actionable follow‐ons from the data. In broad terms, IoT applications span smart buildings and/or smart homes; smart cities including surveillance and smart grids; industrial environments; medical environments; and a (very) large set of wireless, distributed sensor‐based systems with distances ranging from 10 m to thousands of kilometers. This chapter focuses specifically on smart buildings. It provides a brief description of one useful commercially‐available off‐the‐shelf ML‐based product with which the authors are familiar, that can assist stakeholders reduce actual energy consumption by 15–25%, depending on conditions and geographic/environmental conditions.
