Voltage Glitch Filter and Detector with Self-Checking Capability for FPGA Implementation

Short voltage pulses (glitches) in digital circuits resulting from high energy particle strikes or electromagnetic noise may cause data loss and system failure. Therefore, glitch filtering is essential to ensure the system’s reliability. In addition, detecting and recording the occurrence of voltage glitches allows for self-awareness of the system, which is important in applications where dynamic fault tolerance is required. This paper presents a design of a digital circuit for filtering and detecting transient glitches in FPGA-based systems. The proposed solution is based on the standard glitch filter with delay line and guard gate realized with NAND gates, and two binary counters for counting the number of glitches. To enable the detection of transient and permanent faults in the counters, duplication with comparison is applied. Preliminary FPGA evaluation is presented.
