Design and Characteristic Evaluation of a Light Weight Interpole Assisted Dual Stator Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor for Electric Vehicle Application

In the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, the automotive industry is increasingly embracing Electric Vehicles (EVs) to combat the limited availability of non-renewable resources and to reduce harmful emissions. With various benefits like reliability, brushless technology, and a high torque-to-weight ratio, the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) becomes a preferred choice for EV propulsion. In this context, the authors have proposed a Light Weight Interpole Assisted Dual Stator Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (LWIADS-PMSM) for these applications. The prime focus of this paper is to design and evaluate the characteristics of the proposed motor. For this purpose, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is employed due to its high accuracy. The flux distribution and density are assessed via magneto-static analysis, and load performance through transient analysis. Due to its high torque density and reliability, the proposed motor is highly suitable for the above-mentioned application.
