State-of-Health Assessment of Lithium-Ion Batteries in Two Scenarios: Microgrids and Electric Vehicles

Lithium-ion batteries play an important role in the energy supply in different application areas, due to their excellent performance characteristics with respect to other technologies currently in the market, this motivates to develop a research work that allows to assessment of the state-of-health of lithium-ion batteries under different usage scenarios. This is based on a degradation model that has been widely tested in the literature and that bases its performance on data provided by the manufacturer and on its mode of operation. The two use scenarios evaluated correspond to microgrids and electric vehicles, where the first one is based on the operation of the battery energy storage system (BESS) that seeks to supply the electrical demand of an isolated microgrid for a maximum of 8 hours when it is fully charged, in this case, the BESS can deliver 60 kWh as maximum energy and is considered degraded when it reaches 4SkWh, thus obtaining 2232 cycles of use under established conditions. Secondly, a lithium-ion battery of the 100% electric vehicle Nissan Leaf is operated under conditions of use of long routes over 30 km, where real states-of-charge are established and through the Montecarlo method its end-of-life can be obtained, this battery can deliver 40 kWh as maximum energy and is considered degraded when it reaches 2SkWh, thus obtaining 2712 cycles of use under established conditions.
