Microbubble Detection Using Spatially Patterned Ultrasound Beam

Super-resolution ultrasound (SRU) imaging employs microbubbles (MBs) to capture scattered signals and determine their point spread function (PSF), overcoming diffraction through sub-diffraction techniques for detailed microvascular imaging. This study aims to reduce SRU image acquisition time by introducing an inventive ultrasound approach using patterned plane waves (PPWs). We develop a numerical dynamic model accounting for bubble-bubble interaction, demonstrating that implementing PPWs with conventional plane waves enhances the detectability of smaller bubbles within a bubble cloud. Additionally, PPWs can identify bubbles located at deeper regions despite experiencing considerable attenuation compared to regular plane waves. This attribute is a crucial aspect for ensuring the safety of ultrasound diagnosis. Consequently, this innovative irradiation method potentially accelerates acquisition time for SRU images.
