A Review of Complexity Metrics for Data Visualization

The definition and measurement of complexity have been studied extensively in many scientific fields. But a comprehensive discussion of data visualization complexity is still missing. In this paper, we attempt to address this issue by reviewing the existing complexity metrics for data visualization. The complexity metrics from related fields and their applicability to data visualization are also discussed. The goal is to provide a preliminary theoretical foundation and a set of practical methods for evaluating the complexity of data visualization.
