Kinetic Modelling of Conventional and Renewable Jet Fuels

In this study, the autoignition behaviors of the conventional and renewable jet fuels are investigated through chemical kinetic modelling approach using a multi-component fuel surrogate model. The composition of the surrogates was first determined based on the actual conventional jet fuel, JP-5, and renewable jet fuel, HRJ. A fuel surrogate model comprising 156 species and 514 reactions are then developed and validated to investigate the combustion characteristics and emissions performance of these fuels. The results from the validation exercise with respect to the constant volume combustion chamber and shock tube experiments showed good agreement with experimental measurements, providing confidence in the accuracy of the developed chemistry model. The sensitivity analysis indicated that H-atom abstractions on the fuels are more prevailing for all the fuel-lean conditions for both fuels. The study has also revealed the potential of HRJ in reducing both unburned hydrocarbons and soot emissions, presenting a more environmentally friendly options for the aviation industry. This research could facilitate in developing a clean, yet cost-effective SAF that is derived from renewable resources.
