Simulation Environment for the Evaluation of Lightweight Intrusion Detection Systems

Toward the goal of promoting energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint, this paper analyzes the performance of a lightweight Intrusion Detection System (IDS) in an embedded network. We constraint the CPU and the memory usage to limit the IDS power consumption and assess its ability to detect Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. Our preliminary analysis shows that, despite the resource constraints, the IDS still provides good performance and limited power consumption, i.e., max ~ 1.5 Watts.
