Experimental Study on Corona Generated Ionized Field Environment of HVDC Transmission Lines

High potential transmission lines are acting key role in the power system engineering which aids to transmit the necessary power demand to end consumers from generating stations. One of the primary problems associated with this high potential transmission lines is generation of space charges due to corona phenomenon around the line conductor which causes the major power loss of the line conductor. Secondary, the transition of these space charges at the ground levels initiates electrical shocks to the any living organism under and nearer to the transmission lines. The magnitudes of these space charge are varies with the high potential levels and insists necessity to examine the safe limits of the transmission line design. Therefore, it is very important to analyze this corona generated ionized field environment of HVDC transmission lines before designing the new transmission line and already existing lines. To arrive the final safe limits of the HVDC transmission lines at extra and ultra-high potential levels, actual practical experimental findings are time consuming process and non-economical. Hence, the scale down models of the laboratory investigations aids significant support to analyze this ionized field environment of HVDC transmission lines at further enhanced potential levels. Therefore, this paper is aimed to discuss the scale down models of the laboratory experimental analysis of the HVDC transmission lines. From the experimental investigations, unhealthy space charge ionic current levels are analyzed.
