Renovation of the Control System of a High-Pressure Water Rinsing Machine for Superconducting RF Cavities using the UNICOS-CPC Framework

It is often the case that the control systems in industrial facilities remain in operation for many years without maintenance and updates. As manufacturers introduce new hardware and software solutions, it becomes difficult to find spare parts and technical support for legacy technologies. This article discusses such a case - upgrading the control system of a superconducting RF cavity surface rinsing machine at CERN. Due to a lack of maintenance and control system updates, this facility was at risk of failing, which in turn could have an impact on the operation of the particle accelerators at CERN. The paper covers the implementation process of a control system using SIEMENS technology available for motion control applications, the challenges of renovating an old system and the manner in which available technologies were integrated into the control system based on UNICOS, which is CERN's framework for creating standardized industrial control applications.
