Wideband Dual-Polarized Metasurface Antenna for 5G Millimeter-Wave Applications Using Characteristic Mode Analysis

In this article, we introduce a wideband metasurface antenna with dual-polarized (DP) operations. Inspired by the resonant property of high impedance surface (HIS), a multi-resonance metasurface is firstly configurated by combining 3 × 3 HIS cells with distinct geometric sizes. The feeding structures with two orthogonal U-shaped microstrips are designed to excite the multiple resonances of the metasurface and realize DP operations. Based on the predicted modal behaviors of multi-resonance metasurface using characteristic mode analysis (CMA), a metasurface antenna example is designed for the fifth-generation (5G) millimeter-wave (mmW) bands, showing a broad bandwidth of 44.7% and 46.2% for the horizontal and vertical polarization, respectively. The proposed metasurface antenna features the advantages of broad bandwidth, DP operations, high efficiency, high isolation, and compact size, which is suitable for wireless terminal devices in 5G mmW communications.
