Design Proposal with an Integrated Solution for Harmonic Regulation in 1.6 kW Heat Pump Dryers

Refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioning systems are major home appliance applications. In the past, washing machines have provided, in addition to a washing function, also a function for drying clothes. Now, stand-alone dryers that improve both drying quality and performance have been introduced. Stand-alone dryers are equipped with a compressor and a drum motor, and typically consume 1.6 kW of power. These dryers must comply with harmonic regulations as their power consumption exceeds 1 kW. It necessitates a compact power board design without an increase in Size. Integrated power modules with power factor correction circuit have, therefore, been adopted. In this paper, the difference between active and passive power factor correction is shown through measured input current during the operation of the motor. For different boost voltages, the loss in each circuit part was checked through measurement-based simulation and thermal margin was reviewed with a small heat-sink, used in washing machines.
