5G-based fault location, isolation, and service recovery: field experiment

In this paper, we introduce a 5G-based Fault Location, Isolation, and System Restoration (FLISR) prototype that replicates the sequence of actions performed during a fault, including detection, localization, isolation, and reconfiguration of the electric system. Our prototype utilizes off-the-shelf components such as protection equipment and fault detectors connected to the medium voltage (MV) network. During our test scenarios, we connected a distributed energy resource (DER) to the MV network. The objective is to gather real-time data from measurement components throughout the power network and employ FLISR algorithms to make the most accurate and optimized decisions, then send commands to the protection equipment. Our test bed results demonstrate that the FLISR solution proposed in this paper adheres to the stringent technical requirements for all considered use cases and maintains low total deployment costs.
