Evaluation and Control of a Three-Port Universal Input Integrated Converter With Power Factor Correction and Active Power Decoupling

Universal-input power electronic converters, capable of operation with either (or both) ac or dc input sources, find application in hybrid dc–ac microgrids, critical uninterruptible power systems, and islanded loads. Such systems are also useful for integrating local dc-based back-up source, which enhances the reliability of weak and unreliable grids. This article evaluates control schemes for universal-input integrated dual-dc boost converter topology (Chakraborty and Ray, 2022), which is capable of interfacing ac and dc inputs into dc loads. This work proposes a novel power factor correction (PFC) strategy for the ac input port and active power decoupling at the output port of the topology. Compared with conventional PFC control strategies, the proposed control method provides a user programmable power factor control. The presence of multiple ports within the topology contributes toward active power decoupling without the need for dedicated unit for the same. The theory of this control design, its implementation, and its validation has been presented using a 220-W laboratory prototype.
