Design and Implementation of Robust Controller for BLDC Motor Drive in Electric Vehicle

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have become a viable alternative in response to the rising demand for energy-efficient motors in Electric Vehicles (EVs). BLDC motors face challenges related to unsteady operation when disturbances occur in the hall sensors. These disturbances lead to uncertain and nonlinear characteristics in the motor systems, which can negatively impact controller performance. Sliding Mode Control (SMC) is a popular control strategy for dealing with nonlinearities. So, this paper proposes the design and implementation of an SMC scheme for BLDC motor drive specifically tailored for three-wheeler EV applications. SMC can overcome the unstable behavior of the motor drive under parametric variations. A comparative analysis of SMC with PI controller was also presented to prove the effectiveness of the robust controller.
