Perfomance Analysis of Distribution Network Using Optimal Filter Allocation Algorithm

With the increasing load demand it is necessary to expand the distribution system to avoid shortage of supply. One of the easy ways to cope with the growing load demand is the addition of distributed generators (DGs) in the existing network. But since DGs are nonlinear in nature it is necessary to analyze the harmonic impact of DGs in a practical system. Moreover, nonlinear loads are increasing significantly in the distribution network, and along with nonlinear loads harmonic content of the system is also increasing. To add to this fact electric vehicle (EV) demand is also increasing and so does the installation of electric vehicle fast charging stations (EVfCS), which further adds harmonics to the network. Thus, it is necessary to formulate a new algorithm for easy and fast harmonic distortion calculation and finding out appropriate location of power filters to mitigate these generated harmonics. A new Optimal Filter Allocation (OFA) algorithm is proposed in this work, for the performance analysis of practical power distribution networks in the presence of harmonics and harmonic mitigating filters.
