Design of Direct Stroke Lightning Protection by Using RAZEVIG Method For 400/220/33kv GIS Substation Which Include Outdoor Equipment's

A substation must withstand for both internal fault conditions and external impacts. Direct lightning/lightning strikes are significant external issue that must be considered while designing electrical substations. These substations possess protection or shielding from lightning for the electrical power system to operate safely. Direct lightning strikes can harm substation equipment and have impact on substation operations [9]. Electrical substation engineers use different combinations of LMs (LIGHTNING MAST's) & shield wire or earth wires running on top of substation gantry structures against Lightning surges/direct lightning strokes as protection to shield the equipment and substation from direct lightning strokes. The methods that are frequently utilized for designing direct stroke lightning protection for an electrical substation are the Rolling Sphere method [2] and the RAZEVIG method [1]. This paper contains the RAZEVIG Method [1] of Lightning protection design for an electrical substation consisting of 400kV GIS, 220kV GIS, two (2) no. 400/220kV auto transformers, one (1) no. 125MVAR bus reactor, and various outside 400kV, 220kV, and 33kV equipment's. This paper includes a detailed approach of RAZEVIG method [1] for protection against direct lightning strikes using LIGHTENING MASTS, EARTH WIRES, and their combinations, as well as standard terminology and verification of the protection calculations made using an actual area Layout drawing made with the help of AUTOCAD.
