Analysis of PWM Techniques Applied to Five-Phase Drive with Distributed and Concentrated Winding for Torque Enhancement

The stator of an induction motor can be wound in two different ways namely, distributed winding and concentrated winding. The air gap magneto-motive force (mmf) is nearly sinusoidal for a distributed wound motor, whereas it is non-sinusoidal for a concentrated wound motor. Most of the three-phase induction motors are of distributed wound, however, the five-phase counterpart can extract the advantage of torque enhancement with the concentrated winding configuration. This is due to the inherently available third harmonic components, which could contribute to the positive torque generation in a concentrated wound five-phase induction motor. The torque enhancement in a concentrated wound motor requires suitable pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. This paper proposes a PWM technique, which could inject the third harmonic components to achieve torque enhancement. The proposed technique is simulated and results are analyzed.
