Factors Affecting the RF-Induced Heating for the Electrodes Partially Inserted Inside Human Body at 1.5T MRI

Electrodes partially inserted into the human body for epilepsy treatment have metallic wires. There is a safety concern during the MRI due to the RF-induced heating. This study evaluated RF-induced heating for different types of partially inserted electrodes at 1.5T MRI. Based on the experimental results inside the ASTM phantom and in-vivo simulations, it is found that the RF-induced heating for the partially inserted electrodes is highly related to the contact size, spacing, length of the lead, patient's body, and clinically relevant trajectories.
