RFID Based Item-Level Leaking Sensing in Densely Deployed Environments

Due to the environmentally sensitive character, passive Ultra High Frequency Radio Frequency IDentification (UHF RFID) has shown tremendous potential for wireless sensing. This paper makes use of the fact that electromagnetic radiation affected by liquids to detect liquid leakage from a group of densely deployed objects. As the most common RFID metric, received signal strength indicator (RSSI) is very sensitive to environmental changes, hence the changes of RSSI value are used to monitoring the leaking. The results demonstrated that the leaking liquid item exhibited the greatest variation in RSSI fluctuation values compared to the other items with no leaking. Therefore, RSSI changes would play a vital role in a leaking monitoring even in dense deployment.
