Duty-Cycle Optimization Method for Improving Battery-Powered DC Sensor Node Lifetime in Wireless Sensor Networks

This paper presents a simple new idea to design a duty cycle optimization algorithm to improve the lifetime of battery-powered DC sensor node. This algorithm is named “Wireless Switching Interface Duty Cycle optimization (WSIDO) method”. The W-SIDO algorithm is easy to implement on microcontroller. The algorithm consumes only 4 Kbytes of memory, or 12.5% of the total 32 Kbytes of memory slots available on the microcontroller. The W-SIDO comparison application was tested for duty-cycle control on three DC sensors with types PZEM-017, INA-219, and VD+ACS712. The test results provide valuable information where duty-cycle optimization with a period of 1 second can increase efficiency compared to no duty-cycle optimization for PZEM-017 by 189%, for INA-219 by 1045%, and for VD+ACS712 by 116%, while duty-cycle optimization with a period of 1 minute can increase efficiency for PZEM-017 by 1952%, for INA-219 by 8441%, and for VD+ACS712 by 574%. The results of the accuracy prediction analysis of the data set test results with linear regression obtained information where PZEM-017 has an accuracy rate of 95.87%, INA-219 has an accuracy rate of 97.4S%, and VD+ACS712 has an accuracy rate of 9S.47%.
