Automated Real-Time Garbage Monitoring Using Sensors and IoT

The fast-paced growth in the population has contributed to the generation of more solid waste. The increased waste generation and incorrect waste disposal harm the environment and transmit infectious diseases. The conventional garbage management system lacks information on the status of installed bins, leading to overflowing bins and improper management of collection trucks. Moreover, the traditional system spends enormous resources on labor management to monitor and manage garbage collection. This research work proposes a Smart Garbage Management System (SGMS) to automate the real-time monitoring of garbage bins and the garbage collection process. The proposed system is based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and related communication technologies. The proposed system is enabled with sensors to provide real-time monitoring of the garbage bins. This information is then shared with a central console by avoiding bin overloading. The proposed system reduces labor-related overheads and helps to maintain the environment clean and pollution free.
