Transient stability study for a developing island power system with increasing shares of VRE

This paper presents a renewable energy integration study recently performed by Energynautics. The purpose of this study was to assess the system stability for an islanded system with increasing renewable expansion in the upcoming years (the study was planned in 2019). As per the national policy by the government, the renewable target was set at 5% in 2023 and 30% in 2030. The study therefore looked at 3 years, 2020 to study the base case, 2023 as the transition case and 2030 as the final case. A dynamic simulation model was set up in ETAP using UDM models to analyse the impact of selected critical contingencies. The results of the study point out the necessity of deploying modern inverter technology in the renewable assets, and highlight the importance of avoiding single large dominating generation plants. If these aspects are considered, there are no systemic stability concerns at the renewable energy integration levels planned until at least 2030.
