Effective Power Management Strategy and Control of a Hybrid Microgrid With Hybrid Energy Storage Systems

This research article proposes a new power management strategy (PMS) for power-sharing among renewables photovoltaic, wind, battery, and supercapacitor (SC). The proposed PMS regulates DC bus voltage and balances the generation and load demand. The hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) are operated by a proposed hybrid adaptive fuzzy integrated multistage fractional order proportional integral derivative (FOPID) controller, which offers enhanced DC bus management with less battery stress. Moreover, the proposed PMS increases battery life by sending unbalanced battery currents to SC for fast compensation. The effectiveness of the proposed PMS is tested by using variable solar irradiance and load in the hybrid microgrid (HMG). This article also presents a new Van der Pol oscillator (nVdPO) based virtual oscillator controller (VOC), that can be used to regulate the parallel inverters in the HMG. Its dynamic equations determine inverter frequency and amplitude. The computational and OPAL-RT studies are performed to test the proposed PMS under several case studies.
