Guest Editorial Special Issue on Metamaterials, Metadevices, and Applications

In the last two decades, metamaterials and metasurfaces have introduced exciting concepts in electromagnetics (EMs) and inspired new design methodologies for EM devices and systems. The first unit cell element to realize an effective negative permeability medium—split-ring resonator—was proposed in a seminal IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques paper in 1999 by Sir Pendry and coworkers, which has been cited to date more than 10,000 times (Google Scholar). Later in 2001, the first metamaterial with a negative index of refraction was experimentally realized and validated by the microwave engineering community. Since then, a host of efforts have been spent on the fundamentals of complex materials, effective medium models, anomalous EM phenomena chirality, bianisotropic metamaterials, invisibility cloaks, and so on. Recent efforts indicate that metamaterials are able to perform computational operations and even solve complex mathematical problems.
