Applying a Problem-based Learning in the Topic of Modelling of the Power and Improvement the Voltage Stability of Wind Turbines

The manuscript presents an approach to applying problem-based learning in teaching students of engineering disciplines in studying the processes related to the production of electrical energy from wind generators and the possibilities for improving the quality of the produced electrical energy. One exercise for training the students with the help of a Simulink block diagram is analyzed. The synthesized model is adaptive and makes it very easy to change the number of generators and their nominal power, etc. It has been established that the use of appropriate digitization tools and the presentation of learning content combined with interactive presentations creates conditions for personalizing the learning process, supports creative thinking, and increases the interest of students and teachers in general. In the simulation, the students investigate the effect of applying transverse reactive power compensation when connecting the static synchronous compensator to the power grid under various transient disturbances and the response of the system compared to that obtained without the compensator. The obtained results show that the application of problem-based learning methods and virtual laboratories is suitable for students of engineering disciplines.
