Investigating the Effectiveness of Free Space Optics in Central Indian State of Madhya Pradesh: A Performance Evaluation

Free Space Optics (FSO) is a wireless communication technology that uses modulated beams of light to transmit data over short distances. FSO systems have the potential to provide high-speed data transfer rates with lower interference and latency compared to traditional wireless technologies. However, FSO performance is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions, especially visibility. In this research paper, we studied the performance of FSO in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. We analysed the impact of visibility on FSO performance by measuring the Bit Error Rate (BER) and Q-factor for average visibility distance that was taken as the link distance for the test cases. The study was conducted for four prime cities of Madhya Pradesh state which are Gwalior, Jabalpur, Bhopal, and Indore, for the summer and winter months of 2022–23. We also analysed the performance of FSO using two different wavelengths i.e. 850nm and 1550nm.
