Implementation of generalized pipeline cellular array using reversible nonlinear interface devices

An optical array which is based on the conventional arithmetic logic unit primitives, which makes it possible to take advantage of the existing computer architecture hardware and software is proposed. The array is capable of performing four basic arithmetic operations, and square-rooting and squaring operations. Since the array is capable of performing more than one operation at a time, it may be considered as a MIMD machine. The use of beam splitters results in intensity degradation. This problem can be solved by using optical repeaters (intensity resistor components) wherever necessary. Reversible nonlinear interface devices (RNIs) made of semiconductor have better properties, as compared to other RNIs, for the following reasons: (1) architectural independence of the incident angle which is the main disadvantage of RNIs, (2) better beam focusing before beam walk-off losses become significant, which results in reduced input power and switching energies, and (3) a wider variety of materials.<>
