Matlab Simulink Simulation of Faults and Abnormal Operating Regimes in a Medium Voltage Network with Isolated Neutral for the Purpose of Coordinating Protection Settings

An important role in ensuring the continuous supply of electricity to consumers is determined by protection installations. Solving their selectivity and sensitivity leads to lower demands on the primary equipment, reducing the times to eliminate abnormal operating regimes and faults in the network, as well as obtaining better network-related power quality indicators. Therefore, both the choice of the most appropriate protection functions and the coordination of their settings is an aspect to which we must pay special attention. In the present work, a 20 kV network with isolated neutral was modeled, by means of the MatLab Simulink simulation software, and simulations were done corresponding to several faults and abnormal operating regimes. Following the analysis of the obtained results, the most appropriate protection functions were chosen and very well coordinated settings were proposed to ensure the selectivity and sensitivity of the protections.
