SDM over FSO Link using 2um Laser Beam under Atmospheric Turbulences

In this paper, we propose and investigate the implementation of a hybrid space division multiplexing (SDM) - based free space optics (FSO) link using which independent information signals transmitted over distinct Laguerre Gaussian (LG) modes of a 2um-laser beam. The proposed link performance is investigated under the impact of geometric losses, laser beam divergence, transmitted optical power and receiver aperture diameter, and for varying atmospheric turbulences. Using simulations, we report feasible 4 × 10 Gbps information transmission over four distinct LG modes along 12 Km link range under clear weather and 5, 3, and 1 km link range under light, moderate and heavy fog conditions, respectively, with acceptable performance.
