Design and Performance Study of Free Space Optical Communication System

This paper investigated the performance of the Free Space Optical Communication (FSO) system and proposes an optimized FSO system model for data rates of 1Gbps, and 10Gbps. The system performance evaluation is carried out in terms of acceptable Q-factor and output power for different data rates signals. The proposed model covers different cases concerning transmitter and receiver characteristics. The presented work aims at optimizing Q-factor, link range, beam divergence angle and receiver aperture diameter. It is found that the signal with a 1Gbps data rate offers a longer link availability for different beam divergence angle and receiver aperture diameter. The proposed system offers 1.82km and 1.5km link range with acceptable quality factor for 1 Gbps and 10Gbps signal, respectively. The impact of the transceiver parameters on the FSO system has been investigated. In order to provide more insight into the impact of various system parameters, a detailed analysis has been carried out in this paper.
