Noise Modeling and Maximal Ratio Combining in Power Line Communication

This paper presents a power line communication (PLC) system based on M-K multipath channel model. We classify noises in PLC channel into four categories: white noise, colored noise, narrowband noise and impulse noise, and established a method of modeling these four types of noise in PLC channel. In order to reduce the channel fading caused by noise and interference in PLC, a mathematical description of maximal ratio combining (MRC) for diversity scheme is provided as well. Moreover, we validate the effectiveness of the MRC algorithm under different block size and modulation order through simulation, where the proposed channel model and noise model are applied.
