Moroccan Industry Through the Lens of Energy Efficiency: Current Findings and Research Gaps

The Moroccan industrial sector has considerable share in the total energy consumption of the country (22%). Furthermore, it is mainly based on fossil energy sources and thus responsible for 13% of national energy related CO
2
emissions. However, to bring this sector on the path of decarbonization, industrial energy efficiency is a key axis for this energy transition. The purpose of this article is to draw up the findings of scientific research in the field of energy efficiency in the Moroccan industry. To do this, 15 relevant articles have been systematically selected and analyzed to develop a four-dimensional classification scheme: energy audit, energy prediction, energy optimization and, energy efficiency drivers and barriers. Once this is accomplished, the gaps in this topic have been highlighted to open the way for future research issues. The main pointed out gaps are related to the lack of benchmarking tools, key performance indicators, energy efficient production planning and, machine learning models.
