Two Stage EV Charger based on Bridgeless PFC Converter for e-Rickshaw

Electric rickshaw is gaining popularity over their traditional counterpart due to their fuel cost reduction and less maintenance due to electric motor. In this paper, a two-stage onboard charger for EVs making use of a front-end interleaved power factor correction(PFC) converter coupled with a back-end Inductor Inductor Capacitor(LLC) Resonant Converter is proposed. The PFC converter outputs a voltage level of 400V which is regulated using the LLC Converter to 65V. This is used to charge an e-rickshaw battery. The presented converter is capable of regulating a steady output over a wide range of supply voltage levels maintaining a unity power factor. The addition of discontinuous conduction mode operation of the bridge-less PFC converter reduces the complexity of the control circuit by reducing the number of sensors required thereby improving the reliability of the converter and reducing the sensor-associated cost. Battery charging for Level 1 chargers with ratings 1kW-3.5KW is satisfied using this charging solution. Simulation results are depicted to show the working of the charger. The results show near unity power factor and THD levels within permissible limits.
