Evaluating multi-use applications in a co-simulation environment

In this paper, we present a co-simulation environment to investigate novel operation strategies and required system designs. This co-simulation environment is a testbed to develop and evaluate Multi-Use applications for distributed flexibility resources like battery storage systems. Multi-Use operation combines several applications from different stakeholders applied to the same flexibility-providing unit. Using the proposed testbed, we develop and evaluate a Multi-Use application for behind-the-meter assets combining two approaches. The first application is the use of the flexibility-providing units in the course of gird congestion management by distribution system operators in a hierarchical flexibility coordination scheme. The second application is optimisation of self-consumption by an energy management system on the household level. The appropriate coordination and prioritisation of the objectives of the distribution system operator and the energy management system are considered for Multi- Use applications. In order to evaluate the Mutli-Use application, we analyse the utilisation of relevant grid components in our test environment. For this purpose, we compare and discuss the results of Multi-Use operation with results of the Single-Use applications. We can show the technical ability to operate flexibility-providing units in Multi-Use. The basic requirements of the two Single-Use applications can still be fulfilled.
