IoT based vehicle blackbox for enhanced safety standards

This paper presents a proposed prototype of car backbox system with a similar concept of airplanes backbox for enhancing safety standards of the driven vehicle, by monitoring vehicle performance and driving behavior that can be used for data analysis in case of accidents. The proposed solution combines hardware tools like microcontrollers and sensors and software like MQTT and Node-Red. The data exchanged between the blackbox and the MQTT server is essential to build confidence in the severity of the accident. Internet of things (IoT) technology allow the prototyping of smart solutions with the minimum cost required. This paper highlights the drawbacks of the current vehicle safety systems, showing the missing parameters required to perform accurate analysis. The paper shows the developing of the proposed solution in steps, starting from the connecting hardware then presenting the real results. The challenges of implementing such a solution are also highlighted besides the possible enhancements for future work. Applications of the proposed device include insurance risk analysis and fleet management systems.
