Adaptive Congestion Control for Application Specific Networks-on-Chip

Networks-on-chip (NoC) has attracted a great attention to resolve the interconnection problem in billion-transistor era. Network congestion has a negative effect on the performance of NoC. In this paper, we propose a novel congestion control method, adaptive traffic scheduling, for application-specific NoC. More precisely, given the traffic profile of the target application, the proposed algorithm automatically allocates the traffic across the on-chip network, so that the network congestion is minimized. The traffic scheduling method can be implemented in both centralized and distributed manner for NoC. The simulation results show the performance of traffic scheduling is better than other congestion-control methods, such as congestion-aware routing.
