Muscle force estimation in running gait analysis after a prolonged running session via OpenSim

Using dynamic simulations of movement, researchers can examine neuromuscular coordination, quantify the internal loading of the musculoskeletal system, as well as evaluate athletic performance. OpenSim is a digital modeling software that enables operators to create human models of musculoskeletal structures and simulations of a range of motions. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the muscle force differences before and after a 5 km run in recreational runners. 15 recreational runners joined in this study and underwent 3D running analysis. The lower limb muscle forces of runners were estimated by musculoskeletal modeling based on OpenSim. The results showed that OpenSim muscle force calculations were highly reliable, and that lower limb muscle forces were reduced after long distance running. Further understanding of underlying muscle forces may provide further insight into running biomechanics. The findings provided by this study may help runners plan training programs aimed at increasing muscle strength and enhancing running performance.
