Avoiding Road Accidents During Extreme Fog Conditions

As the number of vehicles on the road continues to increase each year, so does the frequency of accidents on highways, particularly during low visibility due to foggy conditions. In response, this paper proposes a prototype solution that utilizes Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) technology to address such accidents. By using Light Emitting Diodes to blink at a speed imperceptible to the human eye, the proposed system can effectively improve visibility during foggy conditions. The prototype system is designed using off-the-shelf electronic components and consists of an embedded system interfaced with Light Dependent Resistors, Light Emitting Diodes, Solar Panels, and a Global System for Mobile Communication. By developing a user interface using Embedded C programming, the system's data transfer efficiency, speed, and capacity were tested and found to be top-notch. In the event of an accident, the system can be triggered by sending a text message to a preset number, which then alerts other drivers to slow down or detour, thus preventing chain accidents. This innovative solution would be the first of its kind for a longstanding problem, and its relatively low-cost manufacturing process makes it an accessible solution for implementation.
