A New Static Converter for the Operation of Three-Phase Motors on Single-Phase Supply

This paper presents a new type of static phase converter using power transistor switches, through which a three-phase motor can be started with high starting torque and run smoothly from the available single-phase supply. It is based on the synthesis of a second phase of supply from the available source, through an autotransformer-rectifier-filter-inverter arrangement, such that the two supply phases operate in an open delta connection to feed the three-phase load. The operation of this converter is explained with a motor load and is compared with some of the existing converter configurations.
