Application of a Current Source Converter to a Sonar Power Supply

A current source converter is applied as a retrofit to an existing navy power supply system, replacing an existing voltage source drive. The 1500 Hz converter output drives a high speed MG set, the output of which is rectified to provide 240 KW of pulse power at 80 V to sonar transmitters. Special consideration is given to both theoretical and practical factors influencing drive reliability. The inherent ruggedness of the current source system is combined with special power limiting and fault monitoring circuits to maximize operational availability under adverse operating conditions and to minimize repair time.
