Electronically Commutated DC Motors for the Appliance Industry

The electronically commutated DC motor has large potential for application in appliances. Adjustable speed, high efficiency and linear response are its more attractive features. This paper describes one form of this type motor designed around surface mounted permanent magnets, concentrated (non-distributed) windings and square waves of input power. This combination of variables is thought to give the best opportunity to achieve the economic expectations of an appliance industry. The important interactions between the motor and its control, and the way torque is produced in the motor are the major points covered. The focus of the discussion is a three stage Y connected full bridge motor/control system.
